Current Weather
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Okay, we are rounding turn four to our trip to Culebra! Anyone know the current water temps? Also, I've been checking the weather and it looks like alot of rain and clouds. Anyone (MJ?) have something regarding this? Just wanting to know how to pack. We are hoping for sunny days, but not gonna let clouds spoil our paradise. Making lemonade out of lemons, right?

We are sooo psyched! (Yeah, I'm rubbing it in. You all will get your chance another time) Still five days away, but my mind is already there.

Five days and counting! Trent.

Air temps: High eighties just a couple of weeks ago. Lows in the upper 70's. The weather report always says there is a chance of rain, but more often than not, it doesn't rain, or if it does, it rains for about ten minutes. Don't even give it another thought, because even if it does rain, you are going to have a swell time and surely the sun will be shining here and there. Once out in that sun, you'll be grateful for a few clouds now and then, and Culebra can always use rain. Gotta fill those cisterns!

Don't know the water temps, but it feels great. Not bath water, just very refreshing. You won't want to get out of the water.

You know, I just returned from Culebra a couple of weeks ago, and have already checked out airfare for September. $242 round trip from Ohio. You can't beat that! I can't even get to California that cheap. So now I'm getting grief for not going somewhere else. Bah, they just don't know Culebra. I don't know if there is a word for Culebra addiction.

Rain is very seldom an all-day thing, Trent. Typically it'll cloud up and rain for 10-30 minutes and then out comes the sun. Since June 1 *does* denote the start of the season for certain-climatic-occurrances-whose-name-we-don't-utter-out-of-superstitious-consideration-for-our-summer-traveling-friends, rare tropical lows may alter the patterns.

You do have your vacation books packed, correct? If there is a finer way to make literary hay than with a pot of Puerto Rican coffee, sitting on the veranda as showers quench the thirsty bougainvillea and provide a rinse for the bananaquits, I've not found it.

Ok, thanks Doug, I got the DIF! Oh, and Trent, as far as packing, it's shorts and tees and flip flops. Hard shoes if you're hiking to Carlos Rosario, a hat.

Doug, I've been diagnosed with the same condition, and I haven't even been there yet! Doc says there's only one cure; move there. Maybe someday, but for now I'll just take the medication (visiting). As far as packing my books, I don't have any. I know it's bad, but I'm not a reader. I usaually wait for the movie to come out. But, you probably already knew this by reading my posts; my words aren't as graceful as many of you. Especially MJ when she riddled Gavin last week. Even if I were a literary conesuer, I would have a tough time deciding between sitting with my book and coffee or exploring the island (being our first time there). I want to experience it all! Unfortunately, 8 days will not be enough, I know.

Bosie and Doug, thanks for the info on the weather and the water temps, and the packing. Kinda what I figured, but the confirmation was great.

4 days and counting! Trent.

Trent,

Fear not, lad. I assume you're bringing your dance partner, and a rainy day might be perfect for a horizontal mambo!

Trent, the weather is (and we're so thankful!) a bit rainy on and off today but nothing that would have made me leave the beach (well, maybe the first downpour, which was a lovely soaker, but it lasted about 5 minutes, if that.
Otherwise, it's been a bit muggy, we have some systems going around us that makes it pretty humid. But that is the joy of holiday! You just jump in the sea ;) At the end of the day, a nice cool shower will work as well. It's probably pretty much what you will encounter. Don't let the clouds fool you though, if there are any...that sun is still shining and sunscreen is absolutely a necessity!

For most people, holiday is the best way to enjoy Culebra, re: DIF. When I lived in the Virgin Islands the locals had a very simple, good saying..."You gotta go to come back, mon." 8 days will be enough for a start...then you just keep Culebra on your date calendar!

See you soon! We don't kick non-readers off the island, we just wonder what the hell you do if you don't read!! Or maybe I don't wanna know ;)

Doug, sounds good. I guess I'm set then.
MJ, I DO read. I just don't read for fun. My eyes read faster than my mind and it tires me out. I will usually fall asleep after about 15 minutes or so. I will, however, read for educational purposes, and I do read every article in my dive magazines. I guess it keeps me awake because I'm learning, or interested, or who knows what. Well, thanks for letting me on the island anyway. As long as you don't make me read while I'm there. I will read the menu, though.

3 1/2 days and counting! Trent.

Sounds more like one-way prices, but I'm not doubting that it's true. If it is, I may just have to move to Ohio just for great Culebra rates. Actually, mistaken airfare rates is how we ended up finding Puerto Rico as a destination. We had originally planned our first major dive trip to be at Roatan, Honduras. Then we heard something about civil unrest in the area and decided to check out other possible places to scuba dive. I went to the Travelocity website and searched for the cheapest flights anywhere in the carribean. Puerto Rico was the winner at $187. Well, I just assumed round-trip. It wasn't until we had already researched Puerto Rico, and fell in love with Culebra that we found out my great price was only one-way. But, by that time, we had already been smitten by the lure of Culebra, and the price didn't matter anymore. Now, I am thankful for my idiocy. We may never have found paradise. What am I saying, I haven't even been there yet!

3 1/4 days and counting! Trent.

Hey beachbound, that fare was from CVG to San Juan on Delta, I think, leaving and returning midweek.

Okay, the "carts near bridges" thing went right over my head. If it loses it's flare by having to explain it, don't bother, but...
I did, however, see Night of the Living Dead. Do they serve brains on Culebra? If they do, I'm in trouble because a previous post of mine said I would be trying "everything on Culebra at least once". I consider myself a man of integrity, so this would be a tough decision for me.

3 days and counting! Trent.

Carts Near Bridges is a concept best acquired through personal experience. I'll toss out a hint: Oracle of Great Wisdom and Beauty.

Now go back and cogitate on Horizontal Mambo. ;-)

Trent, you may have given me a cure for my insomnia! If I could read something for 15 minutes and be asleep, I'd try that in a heartbeat...drop an example off at the cart - which is my little business, no flair about it, really truly - (you can tell Richard you didn't stay, you can just throw the tome out the car window on your way to the beach).

Bosie,

As a rule, when you see a fantastic fare, grab it. Once, I made the mistake of calling friends before I booked. By the time I returned to the site, the fare had gone up 95 bucks - still good but not awesome like before. Now, when we agree to do something, I get their OK ahead of time and book when I see it. Best ever from STL to SJU was 340 with tax and fees. In days of yore, my AA flight attendant friends gave me "buddy passes". I flew space available, but it cost $55, RT. Sometimes, they got me up in 1st Class, even.

y'know I have a hunch tracking software follows the hits an airfare gets and even w/o purchase, the more interest, the higher it goes automatically. I'm not talking reduced availability (duh - supply/demand), just looking at it.

kinda like on Google Earth, the more hits a rural location gets, the higher the resolution the next time they update.

MJ, I dream of insomnia! Oh to be able to lay in bed and watch my Discovery Channel, or History Channel without zonking. I'll will definately drop by to see you. If I do as you say, that would be a drive -by-booking and aren't those illegal?

Doug, thanks, and now I'm cogitating!

2 1/4 days and counting! Trent.

Bosie, bummer you didn't get that great deal! Out of Cleveland, we have never found flights cheaper than $350---and we were really psyched when we got those!!

So where in Cinci are you??

Hey beachbound Sue...I live and work in downtown Cincy and dream of living in Culebra, and fantasize about...well that's enough of that talk. BTW, am coming to Cleveland in late July for the first time if you can believe that. Hot town, summer in the city! It's hotter here than Culebra at the moment...sheesh. Unfortunately there's no comparison between Flamenco Beach and the Ohio River.

Hey, at least you have water to look at, even if it isn't Flamenco!! We dream and fantasize about living in Culebra too! Both our kids know that as soon as they graduate from high school----we are outta here!! Maybe someday we will all be living there, sharing a drink, talking about our past lives in Ohio! Ahhhhhhhh.

I went to college in Dayton and spent a good amount of time in Cincy, it is a great city, even though it is in Ohio, lol. We had a blast, spending $5 for seats for the Reds---oops, I may have just dated myself.

Please feel free to email me before your July trip up here. We are suburban, but if it works out we could try to meet up with you and swap Culebra stories. Or even give some suggestions for places to eat, sleep, see here.
