Our house here in Southern California doesn't even have A.C. and 95% of the time we don't miss it. We're lucky enough to live a couple miles from the beach, so the ocean breezes keep the temperature pretty nice most of the time. However, when traveling to tropical (HOT) environments we like to have A.C. at night when possible. We spent several weeks traveling without it in Costa Rica and I got eaten alive by mosquitos (those nets are a joke). I spent my entire vacation awake and itching all night long, not to mention the dogs, roosters, etc. After that trip, I've made a little more effort to have a.c. when we can, especially if it's going to be blazing hot. We really only use it to sleep though.
