There are lots of sharks in the ocean. Would you believe that some of us go to places specifically to dive with them? Back when we spearfished in Culebra, we could count on a shark encounter quite often. I once had a nurse shark eat my grouper off the end of my spear.

Shark attacks are still lots more rare than lightning strikes. Average is 18 worldwide, not that it's much consolation if you happen to be one of the 18, but think how likely that is to happen. You have a better chance with the lottery!

I was scared to death the first time I saw some sand sharks swimming towards me years ago, so I understand the fear. I agree with Michael's attitude,though. Awesome creatures.
