I prefer your first subject line - just a little oddly salacious in a JG Ballard/Crash sort of way....
it's really about your comfort level. the beaches that you can't get to by jeep you'll really have to hike or boat to anyway. and they ARE worth it.
personally I prefer jeep, but then I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to safety issues (orthoscopic-surgery-phobic), plus if you need to haul extra gear (or stock up at the store) it's easier.
I also like to be able to offer rides to the saps who didn't reserve in advance (and not feel creeped - wouldn't do that up here) - I've been on too many car-free vacations in places where you NEED a car. LA in August f'rinstance and pre-credit card as well. not fun.
I had a pleasant moment last time coming home from a friends rental on the hill above Melones and picking up a couple of Brits along the way who were on foot and didn't even know where to get groceries. I had the privilege of being sooo smug. I got to feel like the insider that I'm really not.
if gas prices are a concern - forget it, we tooled all over the place in a 4-door for a full week on a 1/4-1/2 tank last time.
