Smiling here...there is one very big local event - on the ferry dock IS New Year's Eve. The island turns out, families, everyone. People bring tables and food and drinks, there will be music...if you want and like local, that's as local as it gets. It's a wonderful, amazing time. There are drinks and food for sale as well, so you should be fine, but if there is something special you want to have, bring it with you just in case.
