mamacitas is very hit or miss - something anglo-s just don't appreciate.
Last ime there, we had a terrific waitress one evening and we tipped her well, as we try to do. Next evening, we had a young girl, who could not care less and gave really lousy service. Bad enough to make me pretty angry, whcih is not common. On top of that, she automatically added a hefty tip on the bill -- I think 18% - and it certainly was not deserved. Some of the worst service I have received on island. She was too busy talking to fellow workers, usually male. Openly avoided our table even when we flagged her. part of her probelm seemd to be that she undertood almost no English, thus avoided contact with customers. (The terrific waitress was obvioulsy a transplant from north america - no language barrier and obvious work ethic) I can undertadn this to a degree and I have learned enough Spanish to get by in this situation - but never had the chance. Of course, restaurants have trouble getting good help, but the automatic gratuity was obviously not "policy" and ending up creating a very bad impression.
