My friend Tataki, I am glad that you convinced me into posting on this issue. As a Miamian and with family ties going back as far as yours, I am sad to say that allowing all the outsiders we did for the past 40 years has totally erased our heritage, customs and principles. Maybe for better!! But certainly no more “conching”. When I came to Culebra I came with the proposition of accepting Culebra, as it was, a tropical island paradise with all that makes it so. Sometimes the ferry does not run on time or it can be too windy and the planes decide not to fly.
The power can go on and off and the water in the spigot is not always there. But like Benjamin Perez said in his last article on the Culebra Calendar: “ …I think that we are very happy here, in our own way. I know that Culebra is the only place in the world where everybody knows each other, where we still breathe clean air, walk freely and love each other. …”
So a little xenophobia is acceptable.
