trip report
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Just returned from a week long stay on the island the second week of June. This was our third trip to the island and first since early 2016. We flew into the island via Vieques Air Link departing from Isla Grande airport and rented a jeep from Carlos Jeep Rental.
We stayed at Casa Melones coordinated through Culebra Property Rentals owned by Michelle & Todd Plaia. We have stayed at a Culebra Property Rental managed home on each of our stays. This was my first time meeting Todd, and the Plaia's both are super friendly and professional. They are super to work with and I highly recommend giving them a chance when looking for a rental home.
Casa Melones is a very nice rental, with a panoramic ocean view from a hillside vista above Melones beach. The property boasts views of Vieques, Cayo Luis Pena, the eastern shores of Puerto Rico, and awesome sunsets. The property consist of two villas connected by a small dipping pool. We traveled with a toddler and the dipping pool turned out to get a lot more use than we expected.
We spend most days at Flamenco, a half day at Melones, and short day at Zoni. Zoni beach was covered in sea weed during our week, and the stench was just too much for us. But, with a toddler Flamenco is hard to beat. The ocean surf was quite calm every day during our stay. All the usual kiosks were open (5-6 per day). The camp ground showers and bathrooms were functioning and a crew even repainted the bathroom near the beach boardwalk and install new outdoor sinks while we were there. Not sure if any other renovations are planned.
Flamenco was as beautiful as ever. This was the first time I had been during the summer and noticed a lot more international tourist and mainlanders (style note: thongs are the swimsuit of choice). The crowds were sparser during my other stays, but still quite busy and just about right. Plenty of space to spread out, but also nice for people watching and interacting with others.
We split our meals between preparing meals at the house and the local restaurants. We dined at Vibra Verde twice (acai bowls, pancakes, frittata) , Dinghy Dock twice (lunch & dinner, new remodel looks very nice, with same hard to beat lively atmosphere), food trucks Tiki's and a Seafood truck next door (not sure on the name), El Eden, Jacki Seas, Flamenco beach kiosks, and Caracoles. All of the restaurants were as good as ever. Really did not have a subpar meal. Culebra seems to be an under appreciated culinary gem at very reasonable prices.
This was the first time we'd been to the island since Caracoles restaurant had open and it was amazing. Really comfortable, yet upscale atmosphere with excellent service and food. the tuna tar tar was off the chain.
