I'll definitely be getting a chart; in fact I already have one on a t-shirt I bought a few years back ;-). I guess I'm a bit squeamish because of something that happened to us with some friends on their motor yacht in Captiva Sound off southwest Florida. The channel through the flats is clearly marked with telephone pole type piers with nautical markings, but the shifting sand bottom had moved the actual channel outside the piers and they ran aground. We managed to power it out of trouble, but it was tense, and I still don't know what the hull looked like when they dry-docked it. Now, they never take the boat there without calling the harbormaster to get the latest "local knowledge".
I'm not enough of a sailor to know if this is common practice everywhere or just in certain tricky waters. Thanks for the advice!
