Campiing on Culebra

I am a teacher and am coming to Culebra for Spring Break at the end of March. I have hiked the AT and am used to the outdoors. I am trying to decide if I should camp at Flamingo Beach as a base. Would it be safe to leave a tent and sleeping bag and cooking gear there while I explore during the day? I am open to other inexpensive ways to experinece the island too. Suggestions appreciated.
