Re: Culebra needs progress
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hola! Yes Elvin, Culebra needs progress and so does the rest of Puerto Rico, the United States and the World for that matter. Times are changing. When I first visited Culebra over 10 years ago, it was over New Years Eve weekend. Culebra was virtually deserted, everyone ferried over to the mainland to visit family and everything closed in Culebra, there was no one in the streets. Everyone celebrated quietly in their homes. It turned into a ghost town. What we did like was that no one locked their doors, cars had the keys in them, you could borrow a bike and knew it was coming back, you could leave your belongings on your towel on the beach while you took a swim and they would be there when you came back. The beach was wonderful and everyone was nice, this still has not changed. Culebra is to be admired because in spite of what little or no help they get from the government (local and Federal), the community has come together to make the progress they deserve. Read the Culebra Calendar and you can see how the Culebrense have come together to help open the Elementary School, establish educational programs, rehabilitate young people, take care of marine life, organize emergency and evacuation contingency plans, protest against injustices, etc. We have to learn not to depend on the government when you have two hands, two legs and a brain and can work your way with others to solve your dilemma. It is a true inspiration how the people of Culebra have worked together as a community for the benefit and the best interest of the community. I'm not defending any politician, none of them serve the people, they only serve themselves with a big spoon, "con la cucharara grande" True, we are dependent on the government for the big things: construction and placement of sewer lines, waste/potable water plants, new ferries, construction of new schools, funding for medical programs, etc.but, that doesn't mean you're going to do nothing in the meantime. Get to work and VOLUNTEER, this is what the community of Culebra is all about. You are entitled to your opinion but it is my observation that it's been a long time since PR has had a mayor, governor, resident commissioner that has truly served the people of Puerto Rico.
Happy travels! J
