Re: Spring Break
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Last year 2003 our family vacationed on Culebra during Easter Week—this is considered Spring Break for most college kids in Puerto Rico. We a family of five also traveled with good friends a family of six, so combined there were six teenagers all between the ages of 18-20. We arrived on a Sunday and totally enjoyed the first few days in serene and tranquil contentment, I must mention contrary to popular opinion, our teens did not find the island boring but enchanting and loved every minute they were there. Our days consisted of snorkeling, swimming and of course sun bathing and though there were no evening activities in Culebra, we made due with board games and fishing along the pier. With our days full, we happily went to sleep enjoying the sounds of the ocean and excited to welcome the next day in paradise, until Wednesday morning that is. On Wednesday morning we woke to what looked like a military invasion! I kid you not—Sometime during the wee hours of the morning, our sweet little island metamorphosed to what appeared as downtown Baghdad. The plaza, where the ferry docks, was completely taking over by Puerto Rico’s military. The troops dispatched from San Juan, were all in full camouflage fatigues holding automatic weapons waiting to greet the ferry passengers. Along with the military were police personal in bullet proof vest, helmets and complete riot gear. Then as the ferry approached, the road coming into the Plaza was quickly closed and the police Canine units were dispatched. You can imagine the look on our faces not knowing what was happening but totally sure we were in some kind of terrible danger or possibly some kind of military coop. The scene quite frankly compared to the news coverage we see of third world countries. We frightened out of our mind asked the police what was happening. He told us they were making inspections for drugs. This unfortunately went on the rest of the week. So if you are planning to go there during Spring Break beware you will be greeted by the military and the canine unit. Unfortunately we were extremely anxious wondering if something else was going on because the scene was the same everyday. Our two families decided to leave on Friday which worked out for us because it rained the whole weekend. I would not suggest traveling to Culebra during the military occupation.
