I can give you some answers, Is-there-any-shade...
MJ's cart is on the other side of the little bridge in town. It's always there. But she isn't necessarily. So keep trying! By the way, there's a good grocery store over there, too (Milka's).
When it rains, it's almost always brief. But once in awhile it can pour. Ignore the "60% chance" reports. They are almost meaningless in my experience. Now if a tropical storm hits the area, that's a different story.
Jerry's car rentals are popular. So are Carlos'. Jerry's are older and cheaper.
My family group of seven camped for ten nights and never had a rental car. Why drive to remote parts of the island when you can hike to several from Flamenco? I say, save your money for eating well in town.
As far as I know, all diving, boating, tour, etc arrangements are made in town, not at Flamenco. Flamenco is not a good place for boats to land.
Publicos are only $2 each way and they run constantly to and from Flamenco during the daytimes and early evenings. Be sure to get a phone number from a couple of them so that you can call when/if needed. A great time in the evening to get publicos is when the ferry arrives.
As for your daughter's fear of snorkeling, I suggest you have her read your post. It just might trigger her to realize that a sunfish incident doesn't have to a lifelong trauma and it should never stop her from one of the most beautiful and enjoyable activities that one can do in the Caribbean!
