Well, I did it. I went into the water at Tamarindo during sunset and let the darkness gradually envelope me. (I couldn't possibly go into the ocean at night any other way at this point.) I brought my newly purchased flashlight and discovered a world I thought I'd already seen all that there was to see. And that was just in the one little place I kept myself! I saw wonderful shrimp, crabs, a huge lobster, tons of stars, and a spaghetti string worm. I could only imagine what may be just around the corner. It was absolutely amazing!! The reef really comes to life at night. I looked up and under the reef shelf and through holes. I'm so glad I did it and plan to do more exploring in the future. Thank you for the information and assistance.

By the way, I did see an octopus but, believe it or not, it was in broad daylight out in the open at Tamarindo Beach! It was actually in the turtle grass.

I also saw 2 sting rays -- 1 at Tamarindo and 1 at Melones -- a peacock flounder, giant hermit crabs, lobsters, and lots and lots of beautiful, colorful fish of all ages. Knock on wood, but the reef looked healthier than ever. Melones really rocks on clear days.

The night snorkel was the perfect birthday gift to myself.
