Hola! There is a hurricane warning for Culebra and Vieques and the rest of the island is under a tropical storm warning. Ferry services from Fajardo to Culebra and Vieques have been suspended until further notice, as of today October 15. Hurricane models show that most likely it will be a category 2 hurricane by the time the center (eye) goes through St Cruz, Thursday 2 AM, which is about 50 miles from Vieques, add another 9 miles to Culebra. This means about 5-10 inches of rain for Vieques, Culebra and the eastern coast of Puerto Rico and strong winds. Of course, these models can change. wapa.tv has up to date storm and hurricane information however, it's all in Spanish but, the visuals are understandable.
Call the airport ahead if you have plans to fly out there or back to the mainland. There might not be any ferry for the next 2 days to go out to Culebra or come back to Fajardo, have an alternative plan.
To the residents of Culebra and visitors (who are already on the island) take necessary precautions because if anything, there will be abundant rain and strong winds. Those that are camping, you might want to think about getting into a hotel, tents are very flimsy during these strong winds, especially if you are within a few feet of water.
MJ, Palmetto Guest House and all Culebrense, be careful, be safe and God Bless. Keep us posted on the situation.
Happy travels! J
