ferry on holidays?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My husband and I spent a few days in Culebra in April and fell in love. We have booked ticketa to return to Puerto Rico with our children this Christmas and want to take them to Culebra. I was wondering if the Ferry runs Christmas day, and if it does what are the departure times. I was also wondering if Flamenco beach campground is very busy the week between Christmas and New Years. Is there a New Years Eve celebration on the Island?

The NYE celebration is memorable, IMO. Nearly everyone on the island, Culebrenses and gringos alike, gather in the plaza by the ferry dock, with families setting up tables and lawn chairs with food and drink. Typically 2 Latin music bands play from 8ish until past midnight with literally hundreds of people dancing and playing improvised rhythm instruments. Sometimes the fireworks are organized and sometime they are ad hoc. I try to be there at least every other year.

The ferries run every day of the year, weather permitting, including holidays & the schedule does not change. Passenger ferry from Fajardo at 8, 3 , & 7pm, from Culebra at 6:30am, 1, & 5pm.

The 3 weeks between Christmas, New Years, & 3 Kings day are VERY busy for Culebra.

Well, better late than never! Marriages are always better when you're in love. Culebra will do that to people. I wish my parents had gone there. (smile)

Seriously...

The campground will be extremely busy, especially considering that Christmas is on a Thursday and New Year's eve is on a Wednesday. That means that a lot of locals will take Friday off from work and probably Mon and Tue as well in order to turn a long weekend into a full week.

Definitely go all the way down to section E. The campground office tends to keep families and locals in A through D, while saving E for "Americans". But even E will be pretty raucous. Like I always say... During a holiday period at Flamenco campground, bring ear plugs and a sense of humor. With the right attitude, it can be quite festive and enjoyable.

Arriving on Christmas day could work, especially if you take the 8am ferry. Arriving on the 24th would be wiser, in my opinion, since Christmas morning tends to be devoted to church and family at home. Once the afternoon comes around, there will likely be a lot of people heading over to Culebra.

We have already camped at Flamenco in section E... by far the best, more wooded lots like we're used to in Canada. I was going to book the camp site in advance by credit card if possible. The party and noise won't bother us, our son is 8 years old and my stepson is 15 years old.

My stepson's Mother is Swedish and we will be leaving Montreal after his annual Jul ( christmas eve) celebrations, so unfortunatly we will only be arriving in San Juan around 2:00 on Christmas day, do you think it will be impossible to make the 7pm ferry? We don't mind arriving in the dark... we did that last time too. We have no desire what so ever to spend time on the main Island, and would prefer to make it to Culebra on Christmas day.

Culebra was truly the highlight of our trip and wanted to share it with the children.... we never take them on our annual spring vacation, so Christmas was the only time we could all get off at the same time. it will be thier first time in the tropics, and as avid campers we really appreciated the lack of tourist trapings on the Island.

Thank you all for the info....

You can't book a particular site in advance. And it's difficult to purchase a general reservation in advance, period.

You won't be turned away when you arrive. They can fit a LOT of tents in the campground. I've never heard of it being closed as "full", though I suppose it's possible. And it certainly wouldn't be overfull on Christmas day. The next two days are when the hordes will arrive.

When you arrive late at night on Christmas, just set up your camp and do the paperwork the next morning.

As for the 7pm ferry, you can EASILY get to Fajardo in time with your plane schedule. Will there be room? Probably so. I recommend that you book Henry 787-632-9600 for the ride from the airport to Fajardo and ask him to buy four ferry tickets in advance for you (and tip him nicely for it). He lives in Fajardo.

Thank You So MUch Mort!

I will call Henry, as we were planning to take a taxi to Fajardo. The fact that I can get him to purchase our tickets is even better, and being Christmas of course I will be generous with the tips... ( I'm a waitress so I know what tips are all about lol ) Last time we rented a car and left it at the ferry, but Culebra was only a four day stop near the end of 2 weeks touring Puerto Rico.
