Fajardo Ferry office advance ticket purchase
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Trying very hard to get tickets in advance for our ferry trip from Fajardo to Culebra on Wednesday the 25th of July. I've heard that the trips are often sold out in advance.

However, having attempted to call all three numbers at least once a day for the past two weeks (no joke), I have yet to get through. Any suggestions? Can I contact the Culebra office to get Fajardo > Culebra tickets? Do I even need to worry about this since my trip is on Wednesday (3 pm ferry)?

Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

Perhaps others can chime in but you shouldn't have a problem getting on a 3pm ferry on a Wednesday. Is this correct you "others" out there?

I talked to Jerry ("Jerry's Jeeps") today and while he could not offer me any advice on how to get through to the office to make reservations (other than to just keep trying and be patient), he said that the 3 pm Wed. trip would probably filled with people that did not make earlier trips. So, I am just a bit more stressed now about getting through to that office and making reservations. Anyone know if there are optimal or non-optimal times?

Frank,

July is so busy that it's hard to get on any ferry. Now, a Wednesday in August, September, October - piece 'o cake!

an "Other" :)

I'd definitely try the Culebra office. Then, if they answer and say you need to talk to Fajardo, ask if there is any way they can do that for you while you hold on the phone. I haven't ever done this with the ferry, but I've sure done it with the airport..and it works, 95 % of the time.
Good luck - I know it's frustrating, but Culebra is only so big, and number of visitors needing transport are...a lot bigger.

Thanks, I tried that for an hour this morning but with similar success. Someone could make big money running a ticket agency!

Backup plan: what is everyone's guess as to what time we should be in the ticket line next Wednesday to get tickets for the 3 pm ferry?

Speaking of back up plans, is flying from Fajardo (or even San Juan) out of the question? Round trip from Fajardo was something like $50 this past summer. I think one-way was $28.

Doug,

This was considered but we are unable to fly due to the weight restrictions on luggage. We'll be in PR for two full weeks and have to cart all of our stuff around, including about 20 lbs. in just snorkel gear alone. We're not normally big packers, but packing for two weeks lends itself to more than 35 lbs. easily.

But yes, we would be flying ideally.

But you're just going over for the day. Do you have a room on the mainland? You can't leave all the other stuff there, and just carry your snorkel gear and a set of dry clothes? What about a car? If you have a car, couldn't you leave all the other stuff in the trunk and park it at the airport while you fly over to Culebra?

maybe you could park the bulk of luggage where you stay on the big island for a few bucks a day and just bring the snorkel stuff, toiletries and some shirts and shorts. it's all you really need.

I freaked out once because I had to work until after midnight once and was thinking "crap I have to pack for a 6 AM flight!" but then I thought what the heck do I need anyway?

there is a weight restriction, but I've never seen anyone turned away, I have seen bulkier pieces put on later flights.

Debbie: We're going to be on Culebra for 5 days, then we're off to the western side of the mainland for 7 days, then back to San Juan for the remainder.

Richard (and Debbie): We've actually considered leaving our stuff in the trunk of our rental car and park it as you both suggest. I'll talk more about this with my fiancee ("wife" in 3 days!!) and we'll see if that works. We know we don't need much at all.

Thanks to all that have responded to this inquiry! Hope to meet some of you soon.

Ah - sorry - I think I got your trip mixed up with another new poster's. I wouldn't leave the stuff in the car in a parking lot for that long unless it's just clothes that you don't care about. . .

Here's my other suggestion. If you're keeping (i.e., paying for not using) your rental car for those 5 days you're on Culebra, wouldn't it be cheaper to turn it in, use the 5 days savings to fly to Culebra (and pay the over weight charges) and re-rent a car when you get back?

Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials! Enjoy Culebra!

Happy Diving!

Wow...planning your wedding and trying to get to Culebra...two biggies. I'm sure your wedding will go smoother than trying to get here! Wonder if the place you will stay when you get back will stash your stuff for you for a few bucks?

A note on the weight restriction thing - they never USED to enforce it, but that seems to be changing as well as so many things, as I noticed when I flew from Isla Grande home a couple of weeks ago. Without getting into it, it was made real clear that the rules are going to be observed more closely now.
They weren't quite observed for us (and lucky for me, since I thought I was going home on the ferry and had more stuff from shopping than I'd have going away for a month), maybe due to the fact that we live here and this just started happening. Visitors might not be so lucky, and we might not be so lucky next time either. Just a head's up for those of us used to cheating with no problems in the past.

MJ - I wonder if they never used to enforce it for locals only. When we used to travel with scuba gear, we were always charged overweight fees. Even now when we travel loaded down with provisions (those dang Swiss that order up all the specialities!), we are charged. I can't think of a time when we've gotten away without being charged. Anyway, it sure is nice for us to make the short weekend hops where we have nothing but backpacks.

Happy Diving!

M! congrats!

I meant park it at a hotel, I don't think I'd leave it in a car either.

Culebra is largely crime-free, but I can't say the same for SJ or Fajardo (don't know Fajardo)

Debbie...hmm. Maybe so! We gotta have SOME perks once in awhile (yeah yeah, I know you're thinking, HEY you live there year round, that IS your perk...but as reality goes, that was a nice bonus when you do big shopping, go to doctors, get official biz done, get to the big airport etc. on another island).

Okay, final reply to this and then I'm going to give it a rest. I've called different airlines and none of them had any advice for me about what to do with extra luggage, other than to definitely not leave it in the trunk of the rental.

Please let me know what the best plan for trying to make the 3:00 pm ferry next Wednesday would be? How early should I realistically need to be at the ticket office?

I am planning my wedding next year in July. I have concerns of reserving tickets for the ferry. We will have almost 40 people that will need to catch the ferry. I am hoping that with advance planning, we will not have to worry about anyone missing the ferry. I know that alot of the people are sceptical in taking a "small flight" to Culebra. I have read all of the hardships in trying to get through the lines at the office. Can we reserve ahead online? If so, can we rely on those reservations? When we purchase the reservations, how much time in advance will we need to be there to board? This trip will fall on a Tuesday/Wednesday. Can anyone tell me what I should do or consider that will help ease some of the stress in trying to ensure everyone gets to Culebra?

Thank you and looking forward to my first trip to PR and Culebra!!!

Katrina,

Intro: I started this thread with a query about how to get through to the ferry office via phone. We are currently finishing our honeymoon in PR and my conclusion is that we ended up doing the right thing by taking the plane to Culebra.

There is no online booking for the ferry. I did, in all honesty, try to call several times a day, every day, for approx. 2 months. I was able to talk to a live person 6 times total. Each time I was "transferred" to reservations, and the phone rang and rang and eventually the call cancelled out. Rinse, repeat.

So the last week before we were scheduled to go to Culebra, I was able to find a round trip flight out of Fajardo and we just did that. It was easy (a bit scary for a first-timer on an 8 passenger plane) and quick. We talked to some people at the airport that go to the ferry dock at 6 am that same day and were not able to get a ticket as the ferry sold out quickly for the whole day.

In any event, as far as the ferry goes, you can try to call the 3-4 phone numbers they have listed (the 800 number never works), or you can just start lining up the flights. I'd go w/Air Flamenco as they seem to have the most flights in and out of Culebra.

One last suggestion. We stayed 4 nights/5 days in Culebra and then went on to another part of the island. We wished we would have just spent another 4 days there, it was truly that awesome and relaxing (though the holiday weekend of the 25th and 27th are a bit crazy). So for what it's worth, stay as long as you can. Also, we stayed at Bahia Marina, and while it is a bit of a trek south to get there, it was well worth it.

Next time we're going to just plunk down and spend all of our vacation there. I'll write up a trip report in a few days because I'm dying to share our experiences with many that frequent this forum.

Good luck.

Thanks, for the information. I have to be honest, it makes me nervous to fly small planes. The guests as well. I have heard so much about the island. Alot of the experiences that I have read on getting through to reserve tickets for the ferry is concerning. I have a couple of people who will be trying to reserve tickets as well. Hopefully, someone will get through and if so that person will reserve for everyone. My next concern, if we are successful in getting through. How much time in advance do we need to arrive for the ferry?

I look forward to you sharing your experience! Especially your wedding!!

Congratulations!!

hi katrina,
i get nervous flying at all, but actually feel more comfortable in small planes like the ones that come to Culebra. some are "islanders" which we flew in Papua New Guinea & could always speak with the pilots & see what they were doing/how calm they looked which makes me feel better!

good luck with your travel plans!
