Mr. Fischer, as I said before (and it is not to condone xenophobia), a small vulnerable island like Culebra has to use certain inherent mechanisms for protection against unwelcome intrusions such as yours. Please read “ Insularismo “ by A. Pedreira the best treatise on the matter. Sorry but it is written in Spanish our cultural language, not yours. Not even our second language, English, is culturally close to yours! To draw the line as you ask, culebrense is a person that resides on a permanent basis on this island sharing the good and bad times together, whether or not is a natural born. A tourist is a temporary visitor that comes to our shores to enjoy the beauty, culture and hospitality of Culebra and at the same time contributing to our general welfare economically and intellectually and are very welcome. Then there are the foreigners that USE our island through manipulation for their own enrichment, mostly monetary. Please tell the users of your website, if you dare, where you and Mr. Gonzales fit. Last names as you mention about the cemetery stones are immaterial, otherwise all culebrenses would have Taino names. Again if you want to know about Culebra’s cultural heritage, customs and principles you can start by reading Mr. Benjamin Perez Vega latest contribution to our heritage, his book “ Isla del Pasage”. There are other books by other Culebrenses as well that were previously written, all in Spanish, sorry to say.
Yours truly, Tataki Waki
