In my experience, it is your bank which sets the upper limit on daily withdrawals. BTW you might want to notify them that you will be traveling outside of your normal charge area if you haven't done this yet. Also, you can't count on the ATM working.
Carrying cash depend (to my mind) on where you carry it, i. e., in your wallet or in a concealed passport belt and on the time you are wandering around Old San Juan. During daylight hours I wouldn't worry. Around midnight, I might worry (I know I'm paranoid but even paranoids have real enemies :-)>
