An example of close to town would be the Punta Aloe area -- we stayed at Casa Culebra our second trip. We could walk or bike to Susie's, Dinghy Dock, Milka's etc. easily, but we were far enough from town to have less traffic and noise (not that town is exactly party central). Casa Culebra has a 2-bedroom unit and a 3-bedroom unit, both with kitchens. When staying there, Punta Soldado and Melones were where my husband did his early morning snorkeling while I was being lazy. Our first year we stayed at Casa Azul (Dollhouse) -- not sure what the neighborhood is called. There was a grocery store pretty close (Colmado Genesis), and it was an easy bike ride in to Pan Deli for pastries and bread in the morning. Check out Culebra Vacation Planners to see what is available on the island -- I think they manage the majority of the local properties. Others on this forum have mentioned other favorite places to stay -- just depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend.
