I did the Walmart route in Culebra several years ago for the same reasons, too expensive to rent for an extended period. I posted my experience on the Forum. I would not recommend bikes from Walmart. They were so bad that my wife walked her bike up hill (gears didn't shift well) and down hill (brakes didn't work well). BTW I can do my own bike repairs and I still had trouble keeping them running reasonably well.
