Beth, if you want to be absolutely sure and you bring your 5K bicycle and you want to leave it in the midst of a teenage group - get insurance ;)

Generally speaking though, bikes are safe - without lock. On the other hand, if your bike is really expensive and seen by someone who can tell, is not from the island and leaves with the next ferry - opportunities make thieves ...

Whenever I get a new bike (and I ride wherever I go) first thing I do, I mess up the paint job royally - I know, it hurts - and make sure only to clean the running parts. My bikes look like crap and the locks generally look better than the bike. That insures against crack addicts selling it for $20 or the teenager wanting to take it for a ride. You will not find the pro with a good set of tools who is looking for that ti/carbon mix frame in Culebra!
