Let me refine a bit of the info, above. The west side of the island is the lee side and has the gentlest waves and currents. Similarly, the north shore beaches, particularly Brava and Resaca have the stronger surf patterns. On certain days, this applies to Flamenco, too.

If your 5 year old, is up to a reasonably strenuous 1 mile hike to Carlos Rosario, that place has fine snorkling at the beginner and advanced levels. It has a sandy bottom alley out to the reef that is free from urchins. I think this is also the case at Melones, but I've not explored it thoroughly. Tamarindo and Soldado, the other two leeward beaches, have some precarious spots where coral heads and urchins might spoil a 5 year old's snorkling debut. One painless but slightly pricey option might be to hire a water taxi to take you to Rosario when you have the little one. They'll haul your cooler, beach chairs, etc., as well. I do this when I bring my disabled buddy with me. Otherwise the hike is half the fun for me.

Unless a very recent development has occurred, rental boats are only available inside the Ensenada. Butch Pendergast, who ran Culebra Boat Rental, sold his equipment and shut down a few years ago. :-(
