I thought it would be unlikely this time of year, but the 1:00 ferry (from Culebra to Fajardo) was completely full last Sunday (27Jan08). This caused me to miss my flight from San Juan back to Charlotte. The 5:00 ferry was supposedly also full that day... The reason for this: the normal passenger ferry is out of service--therefore they are using the smaller cargo ferry in it's place. So, this has apparently created a bottleneck at certain days and times.
Apparently, this particular ferry (on Sunday) was booked 2-weeks in advance. Perhaps, maybe I would have gotten a ticket if I arrived at the ticket counter at 12:00 noon (when they open).
I did manage to get on a little airplane (Vieques Air Link) at 4:00 PM. Unfortunately, it was 1-hour late, so I could not make my flight at SJU.
Could anyone add to what I've posted regarding problems using the ferry (e.g. days and times to avoid it (Sunday?). Any indication when the normal passenger ferry will be operating again?
All in all, my 10-days on Culebra were great. I just could have done without this unpleasant surprise at the end of my stay. Traveller beware.
