Hello!
New to the forum! I discovered this forum a few months ago and I’m glad I did! Great info and great people! Thanks!
Hola Willie!
My humble opinion about the subject:
Many of us have Vieques and Culebra deep in our hearts! I can honestly say that I’m in love with the islands! But since you are Boricua and you have a couple of kids I think you should consider the big island. I think its a good balance between the active and busy modern city life(the metro area) and a simple, lay-back atmosphere in the rest of the island. You will have the island-lifestyle but with the conveniences of modern society for the children. If you don’t like the public school system you can choose one of the many private schools. I studied in one and it was certified as a “Blue Ribbon” school by the US Department of Education so you shouldn’t worry about the quality of the facilities or the quality of education. I think life will be much easier for the kids here.
About the crime, PR has no more of a crime problem than anywhere else in the world. But I can tell you this, I’ve lived on the big island for almost 27 years. I don’t live in a luxury gated community(I don’t even have a fence in my property), and no one has ever stolen a dime from me. I’ve never felt my safety threatened here. Not even close. Use the same precautions as you would at any other state. You and your family will be fine.
One of my favorite things to do is to take a map, get in my car and go explore the island. I love to discover new places. Plenty of beautiful beaches, rain forests with rivers-waterfalls-natural pools, dry forests with breathtaking views, caverns and caves to explore, biobays, kayak in the mangrove channels, too many things to list, the adventure never ends! And remember that PR is an archipelago, I read somewhere that there are over 100 islands around the big island, so plenty of little islands to enjoy. I will never cease to marvel at what a treasure chest this place is! Best part is our beloved Vieques and Culebra are just a $2.50 ferry away!
Again, this is just my humble opinion considering you have two kids.
Good luck with your decision!
