Dive operations and dive sites

Author: Dirk (---.pool.mediaWays.net) Date:   02-15-11 08:36 Hello forum, unfortunately it's not very easy to gather information on Culebra's diving locations and operators. It seems only culebradivers run a website. Here @islaculebra.com some operators are listed and I'll call them later today. But does anyone has gatheres experiences with them and would like to share? I read a story from malfunction on two regulators in one dive. That certainly scares the @!#$ out of me. Secondly I'd appreciate an idea what to find around culebra. I recall a wreck or do I confuse that with somewhere else? Your replies are highly appreciated. kind regards dirk

I may have been the one with the post about the two regulator malfunctions, but this was on Vieques. We have had excellent dives with Taz and his first mate and wife, Ann. We will be returning in July for 2 weeks and again will make several dives with Taz. Give him a call. You will not be sorry. Vicki in Tennessee

Author: Debbie (199.89.103.---) Date:   02-15-11 16:01 Both operators are top notch and rent quality ScubaPro equipment. Both have been operating on Culebra for a number of years. Both carry redundant equipment on board in case of malfunctions. We dive regularly with both operators. With Taz and Ann, you will get lunch and a decent surface interval. With Culebra Divers, you do not get as long of a surface interval, but it is usually not a problem since Culebra diving is so shallow. Oh, and Taz's boat is faster. There are a couple of small sailboat wrecks in Culebra's waters, but nothing too amazing. The fish live is typical of the Caribbean, with large pelagics being hit or miss. Octopus, turtles, barracuda, squid, lobsters and all manners of reef fish are abundant. Except, the lionfish have moved in, so I don't know how much longer this will last. They need to be eradicated. I saw an item called Acuspear that a diver or even a snorkler could use to spear lionfish. Lionfish have no predators and do not move much. The Acuspear is used with both hands. One hand holds the front steady and the back is pulled back to arm and release. Lionfish are bad news for fish and people. Happy hunting.

Author: Stacie Smith (---.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) Date:   02-17-11 10:21 My husband and i will arrive next week with our two young kids (3 and 5), and were hoping to be able to dive while someone watches our kids, or to take turns diving while the other watches our kids from the boat. Our older child would also like to try snorkling - we have a life jacket for him so he can float on the surface. Are there any companies that would take us out for a trip like this? Or any other advice?

Author: John W. (---.ips.direcpath.com) Date:   02-18-11 22:00 My daughter was 4 1/2 when she first snorkeled and had a blast. We took her to Soldado (Soldiers Point) and it was perfect. I will never forget her exclamation " I see Dorey!" - a whole school of blue tangs swam past her. She could swim but did wear a life vest which made it more comfortable for all of us. If you hike to Carlos Rosario that is also a good place for young children and finally, to the right of the shark pen at Flamenco Beach. Other areas may require too much swimming. Have fun!
