Do I need a car for a day trip?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

We're staying at the Wyndham El Conquistador near Fajardo. I would really like to take a day trip to Vieques or Culebra by ferry. Do I need a car once I arrive? I really don't want to have to rent one, if there is a nice beach and/or food nearby.

Also, is it impossible to see the bioluminescent bay if you don't stay the night in Vieques? Unfortunately our hotel is prepaid at the Wyndham, and it looks like the last ferry back to Fajardo is at 6pm. Are there any tours from Fajardo?

Thanks so much! This forum has been really useful for me!

You can do your day trip to either island, however, you will be in a rush.
There are tours to Vieques bioluminiscent bay from Fajardo , but they cost a lot.
If you stay in Vieques, you may find a more economical tour.
In Culebra there is no bioluminiscent bay, even is business people say the contrary.
A bioluminiscent bay needs singnificant concentration of organisms, and Culebra does not have that, even you may get to see those organisms in very small quantities.
I do not think there is a 6pm ferry from either island to Fajardo, I know for sure there is one at 6/630 am from either island TO Fajardo.
Good luck, and very nice stay ...

Oops.. you do not need a car, there is good public transport during daytime.

Charlie,
I took the biobay tour in Vieques last January and it was spectacular. On the tour we were told there are only a few places in the world where these microorganisms exist. One of the places, the guide told us about, was Fajardo. I stay at the Embassy Suites in San Juan quite a bit and I have even seen pamphlets on the Fajardo tours. We were even told that Pela Bay in Culebra has them but there are no tours there. The tour from Vieques , boibay.com, leaves when it is dark. You also must make sure that there is hardly any moon. The more light the less you will see. It is worth the experience especially when you go for your swim.
