new site layout
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Michael (63.175.186.---)

I just changed the layout of the whole site - I hope most people won't notice, but if you find a bug - please let me know.

From now on you will be able to:

- Link directly to forum posts, bookmark them etc.

- Same goes for regular pages.

Some pages are not updated yest and the 'frames' will still show up - patience :)

If you find new windows opening, or see the left navigation twice, stuff like that, please let me know!

Thanks!

Hope this is an improvement for navigability!

Enjoy Culebra!

BTW - the Spanish part will take a couple of days - There was no way I could have done both in one night, so bear with me ..

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael,

I am getting the left frame/navigation twice. Thanks for maintaining this forum, it is excellent and I really enjoy reading the postings and answers.

I'm glad to see linkage directly to a post. I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated trying to refer someone to something previously posted, but been unable to figure out how to get a person DIRECTLY to that post.

- How about live html? rather than having to use <> to have a link show up.
- How about links opening in a new page, so you don't have to go back, back, back to get to where you were before you hit the link?

Thanks for the improvements.

Happy Diving!

Debbie, you don't have to go back back back .. there's a little arrow next to the back button where you can jump to where you want to go IF the titles are well done and you can recognize the page. I personally don't like to brake the back button = opening a new browser window, since it (the back button) is the one single most used tool on the web!

Enjoy Culebra!

Abe, which browser are you using? And where are you 'coming' from - the Spanish version I am still working on ..

Michael (and indirectly Debbie)

I am using IE 7 and the English version. It has several things I don't like but one which I do like (and which they "borrowed" from Firefox) is the ability to open a new tab instead of a new window. Before the Forum revisions I could not do that - if I right clicked and indicated "Open in new tab" I would just get the same window a second time, i.e., the list of posts. With the revisions I can now see an individual posting in a new tab.

BTW, this morning (Sunday 10:10) I no longer seem to be getting the double left column.

Abe, I am so glad you said that about links. I hate when a website is dictating my open windows, since I exclusively use tabbed browsing and if I want something open in a new window or tab, I do it myself, thank you very much ..

(I must admit I am guilty myself and still have places in my sites where I open new windows, but am working on delimiting them)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael, Great improvements!! I also will now refer more people to this website with the better links and nicer layout. Thanks for the site and maintaining it so well for all of us to use.

I guess what I meant about the new window links is that I don' t like the links opening in a smaller window within this site. For me (on a Safari browser), I used to get a very small window within the greater blue section of this website. Hard to read, and harder to navigate. Safari supports tabbed browsing; I know how to open in a new tab/window, but I don't always take the time to do so.

Putting a link here to see what happens now.

Well, my link didn't work, so can't see what it looks like in the new layout. Oh well. Later.

Debbie, links only work without special characters - sorry. I went into it once and it's a minor nightmare to find out all the characters people now use for URLs ..

next time try to make the URL without spaces and it will work just fine :)

I don't have any control over the naming convention of URLs on my website - once I publish to .mac, everything else is done in the background.

you can put a hyphen or other 'standard' character in the titles, or whatever gets used to create the URL.

Hi Michael,

When I first visit the site I'm still getting the left hand column twice. If I click on "Forum" in the left had column, the second column disappears. It doesn't show up again until I visit the site again.

Abe - do you have a bookmark, that has a kind of 'weird' URL? - that might be it.

Thanks for your feedback

Enjoy Culebra!
