Camping & Cargo ferry
Culebra, Puerto Rico

A friend and I will be camping at Flamenco Beach in late January. Does anyone know how soon we should make camping reservations? Are there many people on the island that time of year? We are planning on cooking our own food in the BBQ pits for some meals. I assume that people do this all the time. When camping, is it cheaper to just bring food over from PR instead of buying all our food and drinks on the island?

The other question I have is about the cargo ferry. We will be bringing a rental car over from PR. How early will we have to reserve a ticket for the cargo ferry?

Thanks
TS

I camped for a week in January 2002. Plenty of camping space, no need to make a reservation.
Buying groceries in Fajardo at a larger grocery store is probably the best option. But there is a decent grocery store with plenty of supplies in Dewey. Not sure what you are using to cook with, but i don't remember wood being real plentiful around the campground. Charcoal would be best.
A car isn't really needed in Culebra and I've heard making arrangements for the cargo ferry isn't all that easy. The passenger ferry is very easy to use and there are always publicos (vans) that will drive you anywhere around culebra for $2. They are all over the place. That being said, if you are going to bring car to the island, i think reservations need to be made pretty early. We are going again in two weeks and I am dropping my car off at the thrifty car rental in fajardo and using the passenger ferry.
Hope this helps a little. By the way, camping at flamenco is a great experience! watching the sunrise is great!

How about a private boat if you happen to miss the ferry?

I just came from Culebra last week. I rented a car and took it with me. I'm glad I did because we were able to see every part of the island, which you can't walk. The ferry costs $26.50 round trip and it includes 1 passanger (round trip also) and I mailed a money order. The only delay we got was on the way back and it was for 2 hrs. Other than that everything was great.

Would any one know how I can get my car to Culebra on the ferry. Would you know location and phone number for reservations?
