Planning Culebra Vacation
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Buenos -

I am planning a Culebra vacation, and your website
was the most in-depth, and I thought I might ask you a
few questions. You outline how to get from San Juan
to Fajardo for 6$; I was not clear exactly how that
worked, and I hoped you might be able to elaborate on
that for me.

Also, is it possible (or even advisable) to rent a
kayak and paddle out to these beaches that are not
accessible by land? And might one rent a bike to
reach these beaches?

Any more insight into a Culebra vacation would be
terrific!

I can just repeat, what I wrote in the site:

"If you get to San Juan before noon, you can make it to Fajardo by using the public car system ("carros publicos"). Give yourself at least 4 hours to make sure you get to Fajardo on time. First, take the bus via Old San Juan ($1.50) or a taxi from the airport to the town of Rio Piedras (about $20), ask the driver to take you to the Rio Piedras central public car station and to leave you at the stop for the cars going to Fajardo "playa" (beach). These cars will take you directly to the Fajardo ferry boats or to the Fajardo airport. If the Fajardo playa cars are already gone, you can still take the cars on the regular Fajardo plaza route. Unless the driver agrees to take you all the way to the airport or port (they are not supposed to do it) you will end at the Fajardo plaza where you will take another public car to the airport or ferries. The whole trip in public car costs less than $6 per person."

be more specific with your question!

Webmaster -

Thanks for the reply, I apoligize for my miscommunication. I guess my worry is, I haven't spoken a word of Spanish for two years; I am curious as to the process you describe (taking the right Bus, maneuvering the central public car stations, finding the right public car) is self-explanatory, or if it will be an uphill battle trying to figure out how to get to my destination (Fajardo).

Having never been to Puero Rico, perhaps this is a silly question; for that I apoligize.

do not worry! the people are very friendly and will always help - in English! if you do make an effort to speak Spanish they will be friendlier :) (but sometimes they will still answer in English - as happens to me all the time..) The first time I arrived in PR I did not make it to Fajardo on time. best take a room in old san juan (for a day or two!!) and start around 11 to make the ferry ..

Your best bet is to hire a taxi which for around $65 will take you from the airport to the ferry dock.

Once here, you can certainly rent bikes or kayaks to do some exploring -- both are fun and a nice way to see the island from another perspective.

personally I like the san juan & publico option; getting a room for $40 and spending some time in old san juan, riding the publico for $4.50 not only gives you a pretty good experience but also leaves you with $15 to spend on a really good burger (or two more likely) @ el batey! if you are ready to spend $65 on a taxi - i would take the plane straight to Culebra! ($70) this is the fastest and also very exciting and beautiful option.

I have taken the small plane from San Juan to Culebra. It is so beautiful to see the island from above, the colors become almost surreal. I highly recommend it.

The ferry ride can be a bit rough - when we last visited, the ferry ride from Fajardo to Culebra took FAR longer than expected because the seas were so rough. The combination of diesel fumes, crowds (it was July 4) and big waves resulted in some seasickness that stuck with us for a while. It was definitely a *memorable* experience, but we'll be flying when we visit again in February! The ferry is definitely a bargain, though, and under normal conditions is probably a much more interesting travel experience.

Great! I guess the deciding factor for was the luggage. Can't recall exactly what the limits were when flying, but I did know we'd have too much and then be charged accordingly.

Someone recommended renting a jeep to get around Culebra. From what I've read so far, I'm beginning to wonder if that would be more trouble than it's worth. Could one get around easily enough on bicycles. Are bikes easy enough to come by. Are they single speed?!

Can you give us some specifics on the flights from San Juan to Culebra? Is there a flight schedule that is available to see and also to book a flight? I am currently planning a trip for the end of August. Any additional information would be very helpful for our first trip to your beautiful island.

We're looking into going to Culebra in June. I used to live in Puerto Rico in the sixties and went to high school at Antilles High at Fort Buchanan. I was surprised that you would go all the way over to old San Juan in order to get to a building in Rio Piedras for a publico. That seems like a good bit out of the way. I'm afraid once I get into old San Juan, I'll never get out of there..too many excellent memories! I'm happy to hear publico's are still around...we used to take them over to the Condado beach area all the time. Used to get off at "parada 18" in Santurce, I think, and walk in to Condado...those were the days!!

To see the Culebra and the surrounding islands from a different and fun perspective, rent a motorboat or sailboat. See http://www.culebraboatrental.com. Also, if you stay at Casa Ensenada Waterfront Guesthouse, which is where Culebra Boat Rental is, you get a $50 discount on a motorboat rental. See http://www.casaensenada.com.
