costs? what to bring? Laundry?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am planning on going to Culebra the 1st week of March with a friend, niether of us have a budget really. I have had friends that have gone and camped in the past and loved it. I can't wait. Naturally travelling costs money, but I am used to roughing it, camping etc. I am just looking for accurate information about prices.
1) how much does it cost to get there from SanJuan/ how long does it take realistically?
2) Does it make sense to bring a camp stove and groceries or is eating there relatively cheap? I have heard mixed reviews, some say you can eat from Kiosks and such for about $10 perday.
3) Camping I read was 10 a day, and others say it is $20/day...whats the skinny? what is the cheapest way to stay on Culebra?
4) Is it really essential to bring sleeping bags? How cool does it get at night? What about therma- rests etc.?
5) I like to walk, I don't plan on renting a car if it is not essential, I have heard that hitch-hiking is safe and a fun way to meet people...is this true?
6) What would you recommend bringing? Hiking boots vs. sneakers? Chaco sandals vs. sneakers? Anything warm for nighttime?
7) also are there laundromats on the island?

Any info about any of these topics would be great.
great website

To get to Culebra from San Juan, it may cost you close to 120.00 per peson, either publico, flying, or high speed ferry.
If you are short in budget, then you will have to carry, cook, and clean, and lost time for enjoyment. If you are limited that way better not come.
The cheapes way to stay in Culebra is by getting arrested, and stay at the jail there. There is no cheap stay, nowhere in the world.

It is true to hitch hike, and easy way to know people.
Sneakers are good, there was a laundromat just behind the liquor store in the ferry pier.

not to dispute José, but you can do it for wayyy less. Check out http://www.islaculebra.com/transit/there.php. Time really depends but what's written there is pretty accurate :)

Enjoy Culebra!

My wife & I are staying in San Juan for a couple of days (Feb 24 - 26) and then plan on heading to Fajardo to catch a ferry to Culebra. We're from northern Canada (north Alberta) and have never been to Puerto Rico. We're at the mercy of the locals there and would like some helpful advice on how to get to and from San Juan to Fajardo without being robbed blind. I've been reading the forum to get advice and would really appreciate some helpful advice. Thanks,

In the original posting your second question was

2) Does it make sense to bring a camp stove and groceries . . .

I'm not sure where you're coming from but if you're flying, check with the airlines as we have been told that we cannot bring a campstove (carry or checked), even though it has no fuel in it.

To Capt. Guzman:

"To get to Culebra from San Juan, it may cost you close to 120.00 per peson"

That sounds WAY off. Using public transportation, it can be done for under $10.

"If you are short in budget, then you will have to carry, cook, and clean, and lost time for enjoyment. If you are limited that way better not come."

Sounds like you've spent enough time on Culebra to have really absorbed the friendliness, Mr. Guzman!

Hi David,

We just came back from camping in Culebra a few weeks ago..and I just posted some (hopefully) helpful information from our experience here (you have to scroll down to my posts):
http://www.islaculebra.com/index.htm?/beaches/flamenco/flamenco.php&2
and here:
http://www.islaculebra.com/index.htm?forvm/index.php&2

There AND back cost us around $110 per person (Air Flamenco flight + cab to get to/from airport in San Juan), definitely NOT $120 just one way. The flight is about 30 glorious minutes long (or is it short?) - timesaving and unbelievably amazing views.

Once on Culebra, $2 public taxi vans each way. The drivers are very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Campsite - $20 per night per tent (I believe max is 6 people in a tent they allow - but do they really check?)

Cooking - each campsite has a grill, which worked great for us. Lots of people have those portable stoves - you bring the top part, you have to get a tank with gas once you're there...fellow campers said it costs about $5 for a small tank and lasts about 2 weeks with average cooking.
As anywhere, cooking your own is always much cheaper (try grilled red onions..mmm.... and baking beans in a can - goya, or whatever else is available at the store - of course open the can and cover the top with aluminum foil) - also see my links for other cooking ideas...the only thing you really need is aluminum foil, a few sturdy plastic knives, forks, definitely a can opener, a flashlight/lantern (sun sets around 6:30)..we didn't have plates, we improvised and used aluminum foil as plates...maybe a roll of paper towels. You can buy gallons of water for drinking/cooking at the deli in town for $1, or the guy at the campsite sells it for $2 a gallon, and hes only there during daytime hours. Make sure you get your food, other supplies in the daytime, stores close pretty early. Sunday, the town was awfully quiet - not even a taxi van - we had to call and request one.

The walk from campsite to town is about 35 minutes, for $2 a van will get you there in 7 minutes....

It doesn't get that cold at night, but we ended up wearing sweatshirts and pants in the evening - the temperature drops. We have those lightweight sleepingbags for summer season only - that was very adequate.

Shoes - I recommend flip-flops for beach, those teva-like strap sandals for hiking, town, etc...its warm, I wore sneakers once, my feet were sweating.

The campsite has outdoor showers, so we showered/ washed hair, etc, in our bathing suits - and it wasn't that bad at all...the water was a little cool, but hey, you're camping! you're supposed to be "roughing it" - it's part of the camping charm.

I dunno about laundry, but how long are you going for? We brought a little bit too much (even with 1 backpack each)...most of the day you spend in your bathing sut, maybe a light tshirt and shorts, which you can reuse...dont need socks really, maybe one or 2 pairs, and a few pairs of undies...oh and a pair of long pants and a long sleeved shirt for the evening when it cools down a little.

Anyway, have fun, camping is great. Hope it helps.

For those that haven't travelled to Culebra, listen to Cpt. Guzman. I thought he was biassed but not really. Be prepared to spend at least $65+ for a taxi ride. Mr Guzman, you were right. I wish I listened to your responses..............

Different people have different priorities. Obviously someone who wants the luxe accommodations with all the amenities would be better off staying at a Ritz Carlton and likely would not appreciate Culebra. Someone who doesn't mind roughing it by camping may not mind hiking or waiting around for a taxi. Hey to each his own.

The kiosk at Flamenco was very affordable and served tasty food. And no, we did not get any stomach trouble at all eating the food and drinking tap water. Much more than we can say for some of the 'finer' restaurants out here in DC.

We had the opton (last March) to grab a ride from the airport in San Juan to Farjardo for $20 (meand a buddy). That plus the $2 ferry would have = $11 per parson each way.

Excited about Cuebra this weekend. But if this dude Capt. Guzman and his bad attitude is on the island, I may just ditch and head to Vieques. This guy posts like a tool. That the hell is his problem. IT's like ocsar the gouch has been re-incarnated as a salty old bastard.
