Are there any ATM machines on the island & is a US passport necessary or suggested to enter PR or return to the US mainland?

There is one ATM at the Banco Popular in town. Since PR is part of the US of A you do not need a passport to enter or return any more than you would need one if you were going to Iowa or NY.

There is a second ATM at Excetera, a local business. I believe Congress has passed (or is working on) legislation that will require passports for entering the US (no matter wherefrom if you've been outside the continental US) that will become effective January 2007. Google "new us passport rules" for more information.

Sorry, forgot about the one at Excetera.

Does that mean that people who travel to Alaska or Hawaii will also need passports?

Alaska and Hawaii do not appear to be part of this initiative.

I guess it's okay to impose stricter restrictions on all the terrorists (SARCASM people!) that come in through the Caribbean, Bermuda (Bermuda??), Mexico and South and Central America than to piss off the tourism industry in Hawaii.

Actually, I should have read further before I posted:

"Will this requirement apply to travel between the United States and Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands?

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will not affect travel between the United States and its territories. U.S. citizens traveling between the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa will continue to be able to use established forms of identification to board flights and for entry."
