Availabilty of hard liquor?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

My husband and I are coming mid-August for the first time. We were wondering about the availability and pricing of hard liquor--specifially good vodka. Is it easy to find and how do prices compare?

Thanks for your help!

Sue

The liquor store by the ferry dock had a small selection when we were there in February. It will be more expensive than in the US that's for sure. We usually bring a large bottle or 2 with us when we visit.

El Eden, the new deli/grocery/liquor store has plenty of hard liquor available, from Jack Daniels to a couple of premium tequilas to all sorts of Caribbean rum. I'm not normally the "purchasing agent" in the States, so I don't know how the prices compare, and wouldn't you know it, I was the one sent to buy the rum at El Eden last month! It have no idea how much it was. We carry in usually - BuiltNY carries a line of neoprene wine bags in single and double bottle size, and just last week, I saw they are now making a six-pack beer carrier. I have seen them at liquor stores in the states, as well as at better grocers (Whole Foods) and gift shops. Google "neoprene wine" and you'll come up with it. The folks at El Eden are very friendly - they wouldn't mind if you called to ask prices, I'm sure.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Dan and Debbie,

Thanks for your help. I think we will take a bottle with us and if we need another we will just get it there. El Eden isn't the liquor store by the ferry dock, right? I'm sure it will all make sense when we get there, but I'm still a little confused keeping the stores and their locations straight!

Debbie, Thanks for the tip on the BuiltNy bags. I just ordered one from their website (closest store that sells them is pretty far away). They look really convenient to have.

Thanks again for your help. We can't wait to get there (only 9 more days!!)

Sue

El Eden is over just past the drawbridge on the "other side of town" from ferry dock but Nothing is very far away in Culebra. (It's a five minute walk from the dock)

I can put in a plug for El Eden too. Bought wine several times while there in May and owners were very helpful and friendly. Selection was exceptional for an "out-of-the-way" island, and wine was priced only slightly hgher than stateside, and actually some was lower than in pennsylvania's state-run liquor stores (we're higher than anybody...) I can only infer that the hard liquor may run comparably.
