Taxis late night to Fajardo?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

The plans I am making for Culebra require a flight arriving in San Juan at 10:30 PM. Rather than spending almost $200 for an airport hotel, I would much rather go on to Fajardo that night- sleep late, unwind then head to Culebra in the afternoon by ferry or plane. Does anyone know if I would be able to get a taxi at that time of night to go that distance????
Any help would be appreciated.

you can check out "travel with padin" on this site under transport. the cost of a taxi is going to run about $65.00. maybe you should consider renting a car one-way. you can try L & M or THRIFTY. BOTH DO ONE-WAY FROM SAN JUAN ! THE FAJARDO INN HAS VERY REASONANLE RATES, and there is no problem with one nite stays !

My fiance and I are flying in on a Sunday and going to Culebra the following day. Our flight arrives earlier than yours, but we opted to spend the night at Hotel Milano in Old San Juan, (very nice, cutsie, not a lot of $$) and then fly from the smaller San Juan airport to Culebra. Turns out the cab fare to Fajardo is somewhat competitive with the cost of the flight. (and there is no long cab ride)
There are many options still left open to you that you may not have thought of or even know exist at this time. Search through the forum boards a bit and see if you can find additional options for your consideration. Don't forget to ask for other options available. People on the forum boards are wonderful and have lots of great ideas and suggestions!!

Thank you for your reply. Actually, I have done quite a bit of research up to this point. I guess having travelled on ferries many times in many different parts of the world, I just like the idea of slowing down and decompressing along the way- especially since we are staying 7 nights in Culebra anyway. I am not very fond of very small planes any way. The MAIN issue, however, is the baggage restrictions on the commuter planes. When my husband and I went to Isla Mujeres a few months ago and the weight restriction on Continental (big plane) was 50 pounds we just barely made THAT carrying our own snorkel gear, etc. I think we would pay a lot of overweight charges on the small planes' 25 pound restriction. I would rather just not worry about paying a lot extra or having to wonder if my bags got left for a later flight- had that problem in the islands twice also. The Fajardo Inn looks very nice and I have corresponded already about the Milano Inn for the night we have to spend in San Juan on our RETURN since the planes we can take leave early in the morning. It looks great. Let me know how it works out for you and any other tips on your return.
Oh- and I did email back and forth with Padin and have confirmation that they do run 24-7 and will book us for our late night taxi in advance. Thanks whoever suggested that!

I just returned last week from an awesome last minute 19day trip to Culebra

We arrived very late (1AM)after 2 hour delay in MIA. The idea of spending $70 on cab ride that hour doesnt exactly sound great.
We took cab for about $20 to oldtown, stayed very reasonable Hotel Milano, kicked back, slept in, free breakfast and took in old town the whole next day then flew fr IsleGrande airport (right there next to oldtown) to Culebra. Old Town SJ exceeded my expectations btw..
You should travel light and fly, it works out to be cheaper.
((hehe- your flipflops, snorkle grear, suit and sunscreen should weigh 12lbs max)
If you really want to take ferry - what I learned is you should BOOK AHEAD or arrive VERY EARLY. The lady where we stayed in Culebra was forced to charge some people for their room anyway because they simply couldnt get space on the frerry. They are packed with PuertoRican on holiday so be prepared. :)
Our departing flight also left early (6:45) so we stayed closer to that airport in Condado / nice beach with very very reasonable $$
cabs from Condado to airport Intl no more that 15
Enjoy your trip !! ! !

Two questions:
1. How long a cab ride (the $20 one) was it (timewise) from the airport to Old San Juan to the Milano?
2. What hotel did you stay in in Condado and was it expensive?
Thanks!
