The truth about flying into Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I have read all sorts of reports on flying into Culebra. We have flown all over the world and I can tell you this island isnt any different than any others. The only issue is the pilots tend to bank hard towards the end of the approach. These are small planes not jets....the motion is different but you are not going to die. Try landing on a dirt jungle runway in the Amazon if you want to freak out.

Additionally, the pilots are some of the finest around. I and a pilot friend flew with VAL from Culebra to Isla Grande. A major squall was threatening the entire northeast Caribbean. The VAL pilot was on the phone to SJU weather, hung up and said, " We have a 10 minute window into Isla Grande, let's roll." We flew through some blinding rain, just north of Fajardo, but emerged approximately 15 miles east of SJU where, in the distance we could see a brilliant shaft of sunlight shining down onto the Isla Grande peninsula. The landing was silky smooth. I was just amazed.

Thumbs up to both of you!!! The pilots are very good. About two years ago Isla Nena had a problem with the engine coming into Culebra and the pilot landed the plane on Flamenco. It was a rivet from the Cessna aircraft that ended up in the Pratt and Whitney engine. The pilot was amazing and brought the aircraft down without any injuries. Nice job!!!
By the way this was a mechanical problem that was a defect from the factory!!

Serge,
I personally would like to hear about your experience. I love to fly and I fly Gliders myself.

Hi Ron, my comment was just from my experience just as a passenger in a single engine crop (cessna?) during rainy season in central america while on approach at strip of grass near the beach. It's on Osa Penninsula in Costa Rica :) Not a pilot. In fact I would like to hear your experiences.
