I want a nice inexpensive hotel in San Juan, PR for 2/11-2/14/05 - something with a pool and on the beach. Can any one help?

There's a place called La Playa on the same beach as the El San Juan. (isla Verde) I stayed there a few years ago. It was OK then but I can't attest to now. I've also heard good things about El Canrio by the Sea.

Neither does the La Playa. I've stayed there a couple of times and found it to be somewhat uncomfortable. One night, in particular, I had no sleep because of a barking German Shepherd dog in the alley outside my window. On the plus side, I LOVE the outdoor bar there, the Playita. They make fresh pina coladas, cutting open coconuts with a machete. The lady barkeep, Wanda (Juanda?) makes me a huge one, pours the excess in another glass and sets both in front of me, kind of like a twofer. Then, if they aren't busy, she helps me with my Spanish.

I would recommend staying down the beach at the Casa de Playa Beach Hotel which is at 4851 Isla Verde Ave. It was much roomier, and had a nicer beach, although it has no pool either. It has a pretty nifty open air bar as well. the rooms were about 75-100 per night. Stay there, and it's a nice walk (1/2 mile?) down the beach, past the El San Juan, to La Playita. BTW, the Playita has fabulous burgers...can't go to Puerto Rico without my "Cheeseburger in Paradise".
