Trip Report
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm happily looking forward to returning Culebra April 23 - May 9, 2014. I was Just looking through my camp journal of last year and thought of posting some of my experiences while camping on Playa Flamenco.

I flew to Culebra from Isla Grande on Vieques Air. Taxi ride from San Juan Airport to Isla Grande airport is about a 20 minute ride and fare was $20 + $1 per bag and tip. Weight limit on Vieques air was, first 25 lbs free, then $1 per pound. I was traveling with a back-pack, with gear for two and half weeks. Over the years I've tried to travel as light as possible. If anyone is interested in by "packing list", just drop me a "line" and I'll be happy to send it to you. In my previous posts, I've written about day to day activities of Playa Flamenco camping. In this entry I wanted to note a hike I took to Playa Rasaca . To get there, take the road to the right of the airport. Follow the road all the way to a parking area (end of road). Although I've walked there from Playa Flamenco, I recommend taking transportation as its a long, hot trek. :-)

The trail down to Resaca starts on the left of the left of the parking lot. The trail down to the beach is pretty steep in places. I've done it before in "flip-flops" and it was hard on the toes. This time I wore "Teva" / "Chaco" type sandals and they worked great. Its difficult to guage distance for this trail, but I'm guessing it is about 1 mile long. Feels longer ;).

The trail down to Resaca starts on the left of the left of the parking lot. The trail down is pretty steep in places. I've done it before in "flip-flops" and it was hard on the toes. I recommend "Teva" / "Chaco" type sandals or tennis shoes. The trail has many large rocks. Its difficult to gauge distance, but I'm guessing the trail is about 3/4 mile long. Feels longer ;).

Resaca beach is beautiful. The beach is about a mile long, with beautiful rolling surf. Warning, there was a significant "rip tide", so be careful. I did the hike solo and when I emerged onto the beach I found I had the entire beach to myself. Not another person anywhere. This was a first for me. To be all alone in this beautiful paradise was incredible. I spent most of the day walking the beach, swimming in the tide, and reading in the shade of palm trees. I was on Resaca for over 5 hours and had it entirely to myself the entire time. AMAZING EXPERIENCE.

I recommend taking along lots of water. The hike is hot, and the beach is a long way from anywhere, so take precautions to Stay Hydrated. Also, take along snacks and plan on making a day of it. So much fun! I stay pretty tan year round, but the sun on Resaca is brilliantly hot (I got tanned like never before). So bring lots of high SPF sunblock. This is all I have time to write for now, but in my next post I will comment on my hike to Brava beach.

Take Care,

Dave B

My husband and I will be arriving about the same time. I would appreciate your camping list as we will be staying at Flamenco. We are looking forward to all the new adventures.

We had a similar experience at Resaca -- had it to ourselves all day. I second the recommendations on water and sunscreen. Looking forward to your report on Brava, since we have not been there but hope to go next time.
