Groceries on Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Heartening to see so much participation in this forum. A newcomer here. What are the best sources in town for fresh fruits and vegetables? My leaning will be toward reasonable pricing. How about organics? Anyone specializing in health-oriented products like raw honey by Fischer, stone-ground flours by Hodgson Mill, buckwheat flour by Arrow mill, etc? Any of these can be shipped from the States, of course, but there is convenience in local sources. Tips of any kind concerning groceries will be appreciated. Big Island outlets are familiar to me, but that seems more trouble than it's worth. Thanks for the feedback.

The one place which had the kind of items you are looking for went out of business last year which was too bad but it looks like there just weren't enough consumers for those products. . There is now one place Virba Verde which has some health oriented products but not a big selection. On the other hand, they do have a very nice healthy menu.

Arroz:

Thx for noticing my post. Sorry to learn of the vendor's brief history. I will make a point of dropping into Virba Verde, and appreciate the tip. Pura vida.

Arroz:

For staying interested in this thread: thanks! Must confess, in having described myself as a "new arrival" I was using virtual speak. (A minor felony, thankfully, not third degree.) "Arrival" is yet a matter of anticipation as this poster scrutinizes from afar details of life on Culebra. In this way I prepare myself for the concrete reality which all reports confirm as charming.

Buckwheat flour has been my discovery of the year, as unlike flour of true grains, is a complete protein, and affords a real flavor kick. Combined with a traditional flour, it takes on the ability to rise. I further enhance the treat and nutrition with a measure of flax seed.

With reference to the last sentence of my preceding post, I should have said "ground" flax seed. While whole flax seed, consumed with lots of water, do enhance regularity, they are indigestible, so, in that form, are of no nutritive value. Grinding, of course, releases the abundant food value for which flax seed are noted. Sorry for the omission

You can ask at Vibra Verde about ordering things for you; they are great people and happy to help. Also there are a lot of health food stores on the big island. Losing our local health food store was a disappointment for all concerned, but there are always ways around 'what we don't have here'. Usually taking more time and sometimes more money, but such is the trade off of living here.

Culebra MJ:

Thanks for your input. It's good to know, things can be ordered through Vibra Verde. That's a great service, and an endearing one among locals, I am sure.

Small sacrifices for the joy of living amid royal delights are no hardship. I agree. It seems universal that human perception swoons under the influence of so many fair qualities.

By all mean, let us appreciate and protect the presence of so much that is good.

I am so sad to hear that Hoistica Aimee closed. It was a great place to get wholesome food for my family. What kind of products can Vibra Verde order? Dairy, eggs?

Thanks!!!
Katya

Not sure what you mean by Farmer's Market but the fruit and veg stand is now open 5 days a week. It is the same person who used to open out by the airport on Friday.

Hi Arroz,
We are coming towards the end of the month. I remember the fruit and veg stand from our trip last year - a wonderful selection of fruit and produce. We stocked up for our week's stay. I think at that point the stand was there only one day per week, but I could be wrong about that.

Glad to hear that it's now open five days a week. Is it Monday-Friday? We are arriving on a Wednesday late afternoon and I'd love to get there Thursday morning if it's open.

Could you also tell me where it is? Not sure if it's the same place as last year (in front of the school, I think?).

Thanks very much!

It's on the main drag in town in one of the kiosks. Just down from the post office on the other side.
