Cashing In AA Miles If You Do Not Intend On Using Them For Flights

HI Everyone,
My wife and I cancelled our American Airlines credit card earlier this year because the flights that they offered us to cash in our hard earned miles were absolutely ridiculous (2 and 3 stops layovers to a simple destination). The required mileages for hotel rooms were equally as outrageous. We had in excess of 75,000 unused hard earned miles that would never be used and would expire soon. We recently were able to cash them in at points.com for Amazon gift cards, with a cash value toward future purchases on Amazon (which we use a lot). Here were the steps we took:

1. We registered two separate accounts at points.com (one under Michelle's name and one under mine) and selected our respective Aadvantage accounts to draw from. **Caution - make sure you enter your mileage account number exactly as it appears on your membership card. We lost ours, so we entered lowercase letters and were unable to see our account balance on points.com. We fixed the glitch by using upper case letters, and we were then able to see our mileage account balances. Also, some programs require you to have a minimum balance before you can trade - we needed 25,000 miles minimum, so we had to transfer 2,000 miles over, and even though the AA charged us, we still came out ahead in the long run.

2. We decided to make it simple by redeeming our miles for an Amazon gift card, since points.com emails you a gift card number. **Caution - I read online how people who redeemed their miles/points for physical gift cards never received them in the mail, which is why we did not go that route.

3. After redeeming on points.com, it took 6 days to get our Amazon gift code via email, which we promptly registered and were able to begin using.

4. When we hit the glitch mentioned in item one, we tried customer support, and received the best support via email (a day or two later), rather than via chat, which was a very very long wait.

We hope that you are also able to benefit and cash in your hard earned miles if you do not intend on ever using them for a flight.

Good luck,
Nick & Michelle
