Noseeums
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,
Kindly let me know if there are noseeums (sand flies) in the elevated areas of Culebra. I.e. if I rent a place in town or on the hills, will there be noseeums?
Many thanks!

P.S. sorry for rephrasing and reposting:)

We stayed at Tamarindo Estates which is between Flemenco beach and town nestled on a hillside overlooking Tamarindo beach and the Canal de Luis Pena. You can see more if you go to their website. We did not have any problems with noseeums. Of course, there are the usual bugs but as long as you take your garbage out to the garbage cans every day the bugs will be at a minimum. We were out at the beaches during the day. We did not have any problems with sand flies. I think that bugs are more of a problem when you're camping. But then there is always bug spray.

Noseeums can be a pain on the leeward parts of the island, generally, near the water on the west and southwest sides. They tend to come out about sundown and can be murderous for about a half hour. I don't know if the cottages at Tamarindo are bad, but the pavillion next to the pool was where I got swarmed one evening. The tiny devils had a real attraction for my hairline. Plan for them and stay comfortable.

Perhaps the reason they didn't bother us is because we were well away from the shore, where the pavilion and pool are. We were up the hill at our cottage watching the sunset from our deck. After that we would head into town for dinner. We did that for a whole week and never had any problems except for the usual suspects, mosquitos. However, we did use bug spray.

They seem to come and go. Not sure if their is a correlation to rainfall and breeze or something like that. It's that way for the mosquitoes.
