My girlfriend and I are heading down for our first vacation together and I was hoping someone with a bit of experience could review our "plans" and let me know if you see any problems or conflicts with what we'd like to do, thanks!

Monday:
11AM, Arrive via Jet Blue in San Juan
12PM, Rent car via Charlies Cars (already reserved)
3PM, Catch ferry in Fajardo (parking our car at the lot there, $5 a day I believe?)

Tuesday:
All day exploring beaches, snorkeling @ Carlos Rosario & Tamarindo, lazing @ Flamenco
Dinner and drinks in town (undecided where)

Wednesday:
More beach exploring
5PM ferry back to Fajardo, get our car
8PM BioBay tour in Fajardo with Pure Adventures (Is the biobay worth doing in Fajardo? I've heard Vieques is more vibrant/worthwhile)
11PMish get back to San Juan and check in to our hotel there

Thursday:
10-11AM Birthday surprise from girlfriend
1130AM Depart for El Yunque, explore from 1PM to 6PM
8PM Dinner reservations in San Juan, drinks and a night out around town

Friday:
Sleep in, check out of hotel, return rental car
Rum Distillery tour, lunch, exploring Old San Juan
Catch our flight back home... maybe. :)

I think you might be underestimating the difficulty of catching a ferry... the one time I've done it, we were there a couple hours early, and were the last people allowed on the boat - it was a long, stressful process and several non-residents in line with me didn't make it on the boat. The ferries are very unpredictable and challenging.

The drive from San Juan to Fajardo can take a couple hours if traffic isn't perfect... actually, I don't think I've ever done it in less than 2 hours.

Like most other people who post on here, I'd suggest catching a flight out of Isla Grande to Culebra. Once you consider the cost of getting to Fajardo, the ferry, the rental, the parking, the gas, etc, the price difference is negligible and you'll save alot of time and stress.

The rental we are staying with is pre-purchasing us tickets and mailing them to us, so we will have tickets for our trip over before we arrive in San Juan - does that make a difference? We plan on leaving the rental station and heading straight to the ferry dock.

See if they can pre-purchase both round trip ferry tickets for you. That way you are covered. Sort of. Leaving at noon on Monday to Fajardo should take you about an hour. unless they are working on the road. Also look into taking the toll road expressway fron SJ. It gets you half way to Farjardo then you have to get back on the Infantry road which has all of the lights. Also, get specific directions on how to get to the ferry dock and where that parking lot is. It's before the ferry so you may want to drive past it and drop your stuff at the terminal if you have a lot of stuff. Other than that it looks good. One other point to note. As the day heats up the big clouds start building over St Thomas as they make their way to the rain forest in the afternoon. The earlier you get there the better chance it will not be pouring. But that's the whole point of a rain forest if you want to see it in the rain. In SJ, go visit the old fort on the point, El Moro. You can walk to it.

Enjoy.

I will definitely look up directions with alternate routes, I will also have my smartphone on me with a pretty good GPS if we get re-routed mid commute.

Yeah, we can't really change the time we will be visiting El Yunque, but like you said, who goes to a rain forest not expecting to get rained on? We'll wear some waterproof gear and be prepared to get soaked :)

They are only prepurchasing our tickets from Fajardo to Culebra, but I'm sure once we are there she can also pre-purchase our return tickets for us on one of the days.

Again, thank you, really appreciate the feedback.
