Citronella Candles and bug repellants
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am planning my second trip to Culebra in February and wondering if anyone can recommend what has worked for them for repelling bug. We like to hang out on the porch in the evening and my 3 year old was covered in bites from the noseeums at the beach last year. So we need something to keep bugs away on the porch and any advice for strategies for keeping the noseeums from biting.

Thanks!
Katya

We have used 3M Ultrathon which works for both mozzies and no-see-ems. It is 33% deet so you might not want to use it on a young child. We have also found Naturapel to be effective. It is not a deet product but has Picariden [sp] which, despite the name, isn't any more natural than deet. Our daughter-in-law used the Naturapel on our grandson (about 9 months old at the time) and it was effective. We haven't found any sprays to be really effective outdoors, i.e., on the porch, but the coils do work somewhat.
