Friday September 2 (tranportation)
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Anthony Bennett (---.onelinkpr.net)

I will be traveling to Culebra on Friday and was wondering if anyone can tell me about the ferry situation lately or if there is any other way to get there. Private boats etc. and also if the weather is gonna be good for travel that day. I sure hope so. If anyone wants to share a boat ride over I am totally down with that but I don't know any other way but the ferry at the moment.

Easiest way is Air Flamenco. Requires a cab from SJU to Isla Grande ($20-25).

we want to take a boat. Airplanes are cool but we would rather enjoy the water on the way over way more to see from a boat that an airplane I would imagine. Any info on the ferry or any other private boat will be helpful. thanx for your input tho

Good evening,
Actually, the small planes fly low so that you get a pretty great view. And, FLA & VAL are much less hassle than the ferry, particularly on a holiday weekend when it is likely that the ferries will be full.

There are currently no private boats, thus your options are fly or ferry & I concur with the other folk's advice to fly.

Best,

There have been posts in the last year or so regarding a water taxi service that runs between islands. If you search this forum for interisland water taxi you can find the contact info. Not sure if they are still in business, and I think they were pretty pricey. We have flown from San Juan to St. Thomas, and I agree with Terrie, the view is great. We had a fabulous view of the shoreline of Puerto Rico and Culebra's beaches as we flew past last March, and our daughter swears she saw a couple of whales from the plane.

ok i will check into the Airlines tomorrow. I called Captain Luis about his water taxi but I think $550 is a little more than I want to pay to go to Culebra. Can anyone give me an idea of the rates to fly there round trip from San Juan? thnx again for all your help.

The round air fare is $130 per person from Isla Grande and it takes 30 minutes.

Good Luck.

that is also too expensive. before I pay that much I will risk the ferry ride for roundtrip for 4.50 and donate 126 dollars to a charity. I found a flight from Cieba Airport for 38 dollars a person each way which is way more reasonable. But I still think we are gonna risk the ferry ride. thanx for the help though.

i dont think you understand the real issue here. how will you get to the ferry?
if you take a "taxi" or pre arranged car, it will cost you $80 to $90.
It will add two or more hours to your trip depending on when you land and when you can get to the ferry dock.
most people fly so that they have as much time on the island as possible.

The $80 or $90 for a van is worth it if you have three or four people in your party and lots of stuff. The airfare is reasonable, in my opinion, but when you add in the cost of luggage over the weight limit that can be an issue. For one or two people it makes sense to fly; three or more it's less expensive to take the ferry. However, if you have better things to do than sit in a van for an hour, then wait in line for an hour or two for ferry tickets with no guarantee you'll get on, plus spend more than an hour on the ferry, then that tips the scales back in favor of flying.

@ Frank I understand the issue very much! I have a rental car. I am driving to Fajardo and I am aware that it is a two hour drive. We are prepared to leave at 4:30 AM and stand in line to get ferry tickets. And after seeing Linda's post about luggage cost I will definitely NOT be flying.

@ Linda thank you for your input. And I do think we are just gonna drive up and take the ferry. because its not just me and my mom anymore we are taking my cousin's as well so it will be 4 of us. And I am on Vacation so actually no I don't have anything else better to do than drive down (2 hrs) wait in line (1hr) but hopefully less time than that because we are gonna try to be the first in line lol wish us luck on that one, and as for the 45 min to 1 hour boat ride I will enjoy that very much and so will my cousins. and if worst comes to worst and we don't make it on the ferry we will just take the Catamaran tour to Icacus which may not be as beautiful as culebra but do have some beauty to it. I went there when I was 16. and the reef there for snorkeling is Amazing.

Once again thank you all for your input!

Driving from SJU to Fajardo at that time of day may only take you an hour. You can park in a lot right before the ferry for $5/day. You may want to drive the loop past the ferry first and drop someone off to get in line on the left side and drop your bags with someone on the right at the ferry terminal. Then you can loop back around and park a block or two away in the lot. Depending on what ferry is running for you it will take from 1 to 1.5 hr. Nice boat ride.

And if you miss the boat you can also visit the rain forest right near Fajardo.

Enjoy!

@ Geronimo thank you so much for the info. And your tips sound like a wonderful plan. I will drop my mother off for the ticket line and my cousin with the bags at the ferry terminal. and I went to El Yunke the week before the hurricane. But definitely willing to visit again! I am in love with La Mina Falls! lol

ok, you didnt mention you had a car.
that makes a difference
and thats a good point about the weight of the luggage.

and if you dont get on the ferry to Culebra, you can get on the one to Vieques

no, they would be seperate tickets. there is some decent snorkeling and one or two good spots. but not like Culebra. Culebra is definitely superior when it comes to snorkeling.
but Vieques has alot of great beaches and the bio bay

I read that they are going to add extra ferries throughout this weekend. Let us know about your experience.

Happy Diving!

Hello, We would love to hear how things went for you. My wife and I will be doing the same thing the end of November and we were wondering how things went with buying tickets and getting back from Culebra and everything? Were the ferries running? We heard there was some problems with them.
