Culebra vs. Vieques Camping?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello! I camped on Flamenco last year, and it was wonderful: cheap, beautiful, quiet-ish, and relaxing. I'm flying to PR again this year, but can't decide between Vieques, where I've never been, and Flamenco. I want to camp to save money and have more fun (even though I am NOT a fan of the bugs on Flamenco, as I am very susceptible to bites). I also didn't snorkel or rent bikes or hike, which I regret, because I didn't research enough.

Has anyone been to both, and can talk about their experiences? Can you even camp on Vieques?

Thank you so much, any information will be appreciated!!

Yes, on Vieques you can camp at Sun Bay. I have seen the camping areas there. There are lots of wild horses around. I love Sun Bay, which is in Esperanza. You must visit the BioBay if you go to Vieques. It is not to be missed. Go out with Island Advantures. Good Luck!!

Thanks Vicki! Is there a website for Sun Bay? I'd like to know how much it is.

Has anyone been camping at both Flamenco and Sun Bay, and can compare?

Either beach sounds better than the 24" of snow I just got.

Have fun!

You should be able to go to the Vieques board and hit the shelter tab for prices and contact info. I also found Sun Bay to be much less crowded than Flamenco.

Thanks Vicki. Flamenco wasn't too crowded when I went last March. The weekends were obviously a little busier, but we stayed on the furthest end of the beach. I went on the Vieques board, and there's only a phone number for Sun Bay, but no details other than that. At Flamenco, we didn't need a car as we used the publicos and it was beautiful. I'm just having a hard time deciding where to go (I only have 5 days). Do you know what the facilities are like at Vieques (showers etc)?

Five days is too short to try something new, in my opinion. Stay with what you know and you won't spend too much time dealing with surprises. Its a vacation and who wants any surprises.

Peace out
Herb

I am not sure about the facilities at Sun Bay. You can call the # for specifics. You might also do a search on the Vieques board re:camping at Sun Bay, or post a question there. Good luck!!
