Camping
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are planning to camp at Flamenco in July. I know it will be busy, but it is our only choice. We will be flying into San Juan and staying over night before heading out to the Ferry. We are a family of 3 on a budget and planning to use the Publicos to get to the Ferry and from the Ferry to Flemenco. We will need groceries and a cooler. Should we buy these in Fajardo, or can we get them once we get to Culebra?

Also- can anyone describe the outdoor showers that are available at the beach? Are they basicall cold water beach showers to wash off the sand?

Thank you.

Culebra has grocery stores. Usually styrofoam coolers are available at the stores and sometimes nicer coolers, but if you want to be sure, it's a good idea to buy it in the Fajardo area.

The showers are unheated, and they are outdoors with no privacy.

It's worth the time to spend a couple hours reading all threads about camping over the last year or so. Lots of information.

Have fun!

Thanks Mort. I did a search before posting this and read all of the camping info. I knew that there were outside showers, but I didn't know if they were simply beach showers, or intended for the campers with some warmer water. I have seen both when camping in other areas.

I figured that coolers and food would be available, but past posts have people purchasing food at Fajardo, and I wasn't sure if there was a reason for that (more expensive in Culebra, or less choice). It sounds like it will be simple enough to get what we need when we get to Culebra before we head to the campsite.

Thanks!

If I had to describe the showers, I'd definitely describe them as "beach showers". But campers use them, and they work fine as long as you're willing to shower with your bathing suit on (or else put on quite a show).

The showers are definitely not warm, but they're not cold either. Call them "refreshing", which means slightly colder than you'd like if you had a choice.

Some people bring those "sun shower bags", but most feel they're more hassle than they're worth.

The grocery stores are surprisingly well stocked. If there are particular brands you HAVE to have, best to buy them before you reach Culebra.

Prices are not much higher than Fajardo, and the convenience makes up for any difference.
