Does anyone know if there are beaches on Luis Pena? If so, are they worth visiting via kayak?

Yes there is at least one, but to go there in kayak may be a little dangerous, if you are not skilled.
The beach is in the north side, altough in kayak is easy to get in, it has many coral reefs in the entrance, so it is good for snorkeling too.
If you go there first look for currents, and wind, since easterly winds are most common, you may have to do a good job when returning, you wil be facing the wind.
What I'll do is go easy very close to the shore, until you can spot a distance which is closer to Culebra, and make your move.
Nice stay...

The most popular beach where water taxi's go is the southwest beach. You can access it throught a short footpath that goes from the southeast beach with the brown Fish and Wildlife Service sign, a 1 or 2 minute walk. The north beach that Don Jose refers to is beautiful but more difficult to access unless the sea conditions are calm and there are no swells. Please heed his advice on the currents, there are convergence currents between Tamarindo point and that beach that are not fun to deal with when they kick up. Teresa

Maybe the best person to get good kayaking advice is Jim Petersen. You can rent kayaks from him. Jim's wife runs Barbara Rosa's restaurant. My husband and I rented a two person kayak from Jim back in October '04. He gave us a brief lesson on handling a kayak since we were rookies. We departed from Tamarindo Beach. We were fortunate to have calm waters the day we ventured to Luis Pena. We had a great experience. I would still take the advice of the other people that posted on this topic. Jim's phone number is (787)379-1973 Jim Petersen's Ocean Safaris. Good luck and have fun!
