Ahhh, 2 weeks to Culebra..... This is my first visit, any advice on the best rum available on the island ?? Or best for the money ?? I'm a big fan of Cuban Rum but, alas, not an option until trade opens up, hopefully next year. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Hola! Ah Rum, one of my favorite topics. You would think I'm a big consumer but, as a matter of fact I'm not. I'm just very loyal to the product. Bacardi paid some of my college tuition. Years ago, they gave a percentage of their earnings towards higher education funding and scholarships. I was, back then, a lucky recipient. Yes, I second the advice to visit the Bacardi factory. It is located in Catano, a 15 minute car ride from Old San Juan. Great informational tour and you get to sample the product at the end. My picks: Bacardi Superior and Bacardi 151, this latter one strong but nice for sipping.

Ron del Barrilto very nice sipping rum. The longer you let it sit in the bottle, the darker it becomes and it's quality improves with time.

There is also Don Q, which from time to time it's sales surpass those of Bacardi, Ron Llave, Ron Castillo and Palo Viejo. Try them all.

There is also the famous Puertorrican Moonshine or "ron canita o pitorro" Read my contribution about in:

Remember, if you drink, don't drive. Be safe and happy travels! J

Looks like El Yungue will beat out the Bacardi factory tour on our way back but appreciate the advice. Will definitely be purchasing Bacardi and Ron del Barrilto on our arrival in Culebra. And on the lookout for the local moonshine - btw my mother's family were moonshiners in Alabama during and after prohibition. Sold it by the barrel. I was too young to imbibe but it must run in the genes, "ron canita o pitorro" - wait till the locals hear me mispronounce that one !!

Hola! I don't blame you for choosing El Yunque over the Bacardi factory. I spent the last 2 years of my college years working with all sorts of professors and researchers at El Yunque and have even trekked off the trails into the deep forest. It is amazing. Check out their website. It has all the trails mapped out so you can preplan which one to hike and take your swim suit for a cool off in one of the waterfalls.

Hi David, Bacardi is known around the world but the real local rum is Don Q is the one that all locals drink . Bacardi has a plant in PR but is a Cuban Rum that after the revolution in Cuba was establish in PR. You can find Bacardi in the states but if you really want to taste puertorrican RUM buy some DON Q. Is made by Destileria Serralles, the factory is in Ponce that is in the south part of the big island (PR). They started in 1895 making the rum. You can visit www.destileriaserralles.com in there you can find more info about their history and their products. They also manufacture other rum brands as Ron AƱejo, Ron Palo Viejo, Ron Granado, Ron Llave, Ron Rico. Don Q comes in Don Q Cristal (white ), Don Q Oro (yellow), Don Q Limon (with lime) and the launched resently two or three other flavors. My favorite is Don Q Cristal. Have fun in Culebra!
