Getting around without a car
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Will be visiting at the end of March. I'm active and willing to walk or bike around the island as well as use public transportation. Can one reasonably get around the island without a car?

Hola! We've always been to Culebra without a car. If you think you're going to spend more than $45-50 on transportation/day amongst all in your party, then I would recommend renting a vehicle. If not, publicos and walking is the way to go. Other things to take in consideration: the place we were staying provided us with bikes to get around (Casita Tropical) at no additional cost. Our lodging was relatively close to town and places to eat. Our hosts, Molly and Jerry provided us with free pickup and drop off to and from the pier and to the beach and town. The publicos will take you just about anywhere and even to some of the beaches that are further away for a bit more than their usual price. Flamenco trips and into town cost $2 per ride per person and other places like Zoni beach or pickup at your place of lodging costs more, between $3-5. Make your budget and plan ahead. Happy travels! Good afternoon,

FYI, Flamenco trips & town now run $3.0 pp for the publicos. The rates changed a few months back.

A 50% increase; where's the recession everyone is talking about?

Enjoy Culebra!

Hi. for some reason nothing appears when I actually click on it to read. Anyone know what I could do?
Anyway, we are staying about 5 minutes from town. Would a bike be ok to get? Scooters seem a littly pricey. Thank you.

I'm am unfamiliar with publicos. These are taxis without the designation? How would I identify one? Is there a problem getting one coming off or to the ferry on a weekend?

James,
No problem at all, they line up at the ferry dock. They are more like mini buses or vans and they will direct you to one to go to the beach. Then they line up at the beach to take you back. $3 each way. Have fun!

Are there any restaurants near Flamenco that's close enough to walk?
