Safety In Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi! My husband and I will be traveling to Culebra next month and there is a chance that I will arrive before him. That would give me one night alone in our apartment in Dewey. Is that safe? I think it would be fine if we were staying at a hotel- but I am a little nervous being completely solo. Thanks!

I was tempted to be sarcastic, but...

imagine you're in Centralia and good-natured relatives are a few doors away.

no casinos means not a lot of cash in pockets, no cruise ships means not a lot of fleece. but always be aware of surroundings anywhere as one always should, that said - you should be fine. the targets of some islands just aren't there. it's a small town, few easy exit routes, few visitors are splashy with money.

bring a book.

Layne, I have been to Culebra twice by myself and have never felt afraid for my safety, even walking at night...however, in my other life I live in the concrete jungle and so I have a kind of "wariness". Keep your head up and have a great time!

My husband occasionally plays music in Culebra. I am not a night owl and don't stay for the whole gig sometimes, so I often walk back our lodgings by myself. I've never found myself fearful of walking through town by myself. Don't be fooled - bad things can and do happen on Culebra, but it is relatively safe.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Having lived here solo for almost seven years and walking back and forth to town day and night (almost a two mile walk out of town), sometimes late at night if I run out of smokes, I've never felt afraid. You'll be fine.

But MJ, maybe people are afraid of YOU! You can be pretty feisty.

Yes beware... she comes equipped with her weapon.... hot sauce! Just ask the TSA folks about their cache of "deadly" sauces!

We just returned from Vieques and Culebra and our impressions are that Culebra is one of the safest islands we have ever been to in the Caribbean. The people whom we met were friendly and seemed genuinely interested in us. You should be fine; of course, use your common sense and enjoy one of the most enchanted and beautiful islands in the Caribbean.

all the best, alashas http://honeymoon2.smugmug.com/
