Camping in October
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm planning on camping at Flamenco Beach Campground starting on Columbus Day weekend (Oct 10). I would kindof expect that weekend shall bring in some campers from Fajardo (3-day weekend).

Does anyone know if the campground will be open during that time?

I remember reading that they sometimes close the campground in September due to hurricane season.

I tried calling the campground to confirm if they're open or not, but the phone line seems to be down.

Thanks ahead of time!

Detlef

I just got through to the campground, and it will be open in October.

I'm looking forward, I've been there before in December, January, and February.

Should be a great time to go, Detlef! (Barring a major storm.)

I've always felt that October is the best time to travel anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Weather is usually ideal and so are the crowds.

How long are you camping for this time?

I'll be camping for 7 or 8 nights.

I'll probably go again in the winter (sometime in February), and be a little more social. All the other times I've gone were in winter. Last mid-January we got rained on real hard a couple nights. But my tent faired very dry & well--of coarse I worked the drainage around/away from the tent (before the rains). I remember other campers not fairing so well... I hate the idea of packing up with everything soaked, after sleeping soaked... doom & gloom in paradise. The entire campground emptied out after those rains. It cleared up & was beautiful the following week.

Looking forward to a great experience!

Sorry I haven't posted until now.

As far as the camping this time 'round... with hurricane Omar looming to the south. The mosquitos were definatley present particularly at dusk. We moved our camp to a breezy spot in Area E, and that helped lots. Lots of rain, maybe a day with good sun before the campground actually shut down, and we headed back to San Juan for the remaining 4 days of our stay. Hey, we made the best of it.

At our arrival in San Juan, we were soaked and low in morale. Still kindof bummed out. Just overall bad luck--at least we were not sick (with dengue fever or something too)

Hola! Maybe you'll have better luck next time. It has been very rainy this year, more than usual. Don't feel bad. The same thing happened to me when we went to St. Georges Island in Florida. We had rented a beautiful house right on the beach for a week and we only had one sunny day, rain almost everyday. I hope that when you return in February you'll have better weather. Happy travels! Detlef, you clearly did something to offend God. Care to disclose it to the board? It must have been a doozy, and I bet it's interesting! (smile)
